When I completed the diary, I sold it back and bought a gem bag and a coal bag.Ive not done much gem mining, a couple hours at best, if you have it, use it but dont go out your way to get it just for mining, its use comes through slayer, which its pretty good for, get it for that. I would recommend that if you purchase prospector that you keep it.
The gem bag used to be fairly important as it made it easier to collect gems over time, but it isn't particularly necessary any more for that.
